Laura Ingraham has continued bad press
Questions:
  1. Does Laura Ingraham belong on the air? Why/why not?
  2. Should this behavior be tolerated for reporters?
  3. Do you think bad press is affecting sports negatively? Why/why not?

  1. Laura Ingraham no longer belongs on the air, especially in a sports reporting studio. The comments and argument she made against Lebron and the NBAP made her sound dramatically stupid, and although it was great for publicity, it was terrible, terrible publicity. Fans and people everywhere have erupted over this news segment, to where one of Americas biggest sports, basketball, is after Laura and her news team. In no way should this behavior be tolerated for reporters. Players should be able to voice their opinions about politics, and nobody, even the president (none the less a news reporter who clearly doesn't know what she's talking about) should be able to take that right away. I would make the case that Lebron is more qualified to talk about racial discrimination and the issues our country faces compared to Laura Ingraham. In this case, this "bad press" is actually good for sports, and specifically the NBA, because now there are millions of people backing these players in saying they will not "shut up and dribble," which grows a huge connection between players and fans, because now some can personally connect with these players.

  2. I think that Laura Ingraham has no business being on the air with the way she has been behaving. The negativity and mockery that she directed towards Kevin Durant and LeBron James about racism made herself look bad, even though she had mean intentions to make the NBA players to look bad. I think this behavior should not be tolerated by any means, as telling LeBron to "shut up and dribble" and then her making fun of Parkland shooting survivors with thousands of people watching is completely uncalled for and disrespectful. Bad press affects sports negatively because there could be a deep connection with a player and a struggle they face with, and they are brave enough to speak about how they feel. But with the controversy with the bad press and LeBron James, this actually be beneficial to the NBA players because fans can empathize for the athletes and support them through hard times like these.

  3. I think that Laura should not be allowed to continue her program. If this were the first time that this had happened I would agree that she should be allowed another chance. But unfortunately this is not the case. Anyone who does not have the social awareness to understand that it is incorrect to mock a 17 year old who just survived one of the worse mass shootings in history, should not be allowed to voice her opinions to the American public. Laura Ingraham clearly does not have the ability to keep certain thoughts to herself and therefore she does not have the right to be able to voice her opinion on such a credible platform. This behavior cannot be tolerated by reporters. Reporters are supposed to report the news with no bias, unfortunately with the current state of American politics this is not the case. The news channels have certain political affiliations that make them act / say certain opinions when covering the news. While Ingrahams comments are not about politics, it does go to show how our news channels need to be monitored and regulated.

  4. I believe that it is not our place to decide whether or not Laura Ingram should still be on air. To call for the resignation of someone only because a tweet hurt their feelings is completely ridiculous. Although, it is not right nor nice to mock anyone (especially a teenage school shooting survivor), Laura is entitled to her own beliefs as all Americans are. I believe her tweet wasn't even that offensive and the backlash because of it is a complete over reaction. Although this behavior should not be promoted, I do not believe that it can't be tolerated. Many news anchors throughout the years have expressed their controversial beliefs or thoughts and have not met nearly this much criticism for doing so. CNN contributor, Joan Walsh, recently mocked a conservative pro-gun Parkland survivor and endowing so received little to no backlash from the media and advertisers. Personally, I believe this issue has very little to do with sports and that this will have virtually no affect on the sports world in general.

  5. I do not believe that Laura Ingraham deserves to be on the air anymore because of the list of inappropriate and patronizing comments she has spewed on the news in the past weeks and months. The first instance of this was seen when Ingraham broke down an ESPN podcast where NBA superstars LeBron James and Kevin Durant spoke to the issue that threaten the nation as a whole. After the video, Ingraham proceeded to poke fun at the athletes' grammatical errors and also told them to stick to sports or "Shut up and dribble" in her own terms. Even if that was not enough to be reprimanded, Ingraham struck again when she mocked the tweets of a school shooting survivor. It is completely unprecedented to go after or try to put down someone on social media, especially if this certain someone was a victim of gun violence in a place of education. Ingraham then saw displeasure and backing out of her sponsors and supporters which resulted in her eventual "Vacation". This is a prime example of why this should not be allowed or tolerated in the news world. The objective of a news source is rather to inform, not to insult and mock people who voice their opinions on any platform. I think that this press is beneficial to athletes such as LeBron James because it gives them more of a reason to voice their opinions and to reject the negative comments thrown at them while setting a example for the future generation.

  6. I think that Laura Ingraham needs to either take some leave or be suspended. I think that she needs to take a break, get out of the press and wait for it all to blow over if she wants to continue her show and career. With her heated argument/roast at Lebron and now attacking Parkland survivors, she seems to of lost it a little...I think that she definitely needs to change the view of her from an audience point of view. I do not think these sort of actions should be tolerated, her job is to report information and be credible. Yes shes entitled to her own argument and opinion but she should keep it in mind that she is well known to many across the U.S. I think that the press has typically always had a bad influence on sports. The press has started issues with many sporting stars, I know that it is very bad in England, the national press roasting their own country's team when not succeeding in Euro championships or the World Cup, it has almost created a thing where England are scared of under performing in tournaments and are more likely to do bad, so yes I do feel as though the press is affecting sports negatively.

  7. I think that everyone is entitled to their own opinion given the fact that the right to free speech is guaranteed in our constitution. However, I think the comments that she made in this instance are very aggressive and hostile. I think that is she is a well qualified and honest reporter her opinions shouldn't matter, but I don't think she should seek out conflict by targeting a single person on twitter. I don't think this particularly influences sports because quite frankly it has noting to do with sports. However I think in general what she is saying is bad press for everyone.

  8. I think that she does belong on the air but the things that she is saying towards these pro athletes is not right. When you get to the level such as the NBA and then someone just goes and says that you don't belong there and that you should go back to school and learn how to speak. This should not be tolerated but at the same time she has the right as an American to say all this even though its not right and it just should no be said to people, who have worked their ass off to get there. I do think that bad press is affecting sports because when sports don't get as many reports on them then people don't learn about what is going on. Like people started to watch women's basketball when the found out about what the UCONN team was doing, but before that not a lot of people were.

  9. I believe that many of the comments and remarks that Laura Ingraham has come out and said have been inappropriate, however this does not mean that she should be "kicked of the air". In our country the first amendment is very important and just because someone says something that you do not agree with that doesn't mean they can just lose their job, That is a decision of her employer. If Fox News believe that she is the right person for the job than she should most defiantly stay on air, it is our choice on weather or not we want to listen to her. In the broad world of sports I think it is important to understand that everyone including reporters can make mistakes, in the end the only people that decide weather or not are the ones employing the reporter. Personally I do not feel that bad press is really negatively affecting sports for two reasons. Firstly there are many news stories and 1 bad article can only do so much, also a bad altercation such as the one of Laura Ingraham and Lebron James can result in a positive outcome like more athletes coming out and using their platform to advocate for change.

  10. I do not agree with Laura Ingraham. I believe that if Laura Ingraham has been on the air for as long as she has, then she has found the platform to express what she thinks. Everyone is entitled to have and voice their opinions in society. The fact that Laura Ingraham is able to voice her opinion on Fox for as long as she has then there is a niche for her and she can do as she likes for as long as Fox supports and approves. If either Fox, or Laura have a disagreement, they can part ways. However, even if she was not part of a major news program, she still is allowed to voice any and all opinions that she has. Just because people may not agree with her doesn't mean she should be silenced.

This behavior does not have to be tolerated. If she is still at Fox, then Fox approves. If Fox didn't approve of this behavior then they can fire her at any time. So clearly Fox is in agreeance with her. The people however do not have to tolerate this. They have two decisions; voice against her, or ignore it. Freedom of speech applies to everyone even if their message is bogus.

I do not think bad press affects sports negatively. I don't think that Laura Ingraham has any affect on sports, nor any other reporter, news station, or journalist. If anything bad press increases sports popularity. Our society feeds on controversy and conflict. I think many fans are attracted to the sports industry because of the drama associated with it. Sports media would be boring if it were all stats and plays. People love crazy.

  11. I believe that Laura Ingraham did a poor job on the air. I think this because her terrible tone and attempt to make LeBron James and Kevin Durant look dumb. This is because she just simply took it too far and it just made her look worse. I don't think that Laura Ingraham had the intent of making herself look bad or to do a lot of damage but the result did not turn to her favor. I think that if Laura Ingraham used a less harsh tone then more people could have understood her point instead of siding with LeBron and Durant because to many it looked like they were attacked by her. So I don't think it is a necessity to take Laura Ingraham off of the air but she should definitely use that moment to learn what to say and how to say it.

  12. I think that bad press has both a positive and negative effect on sports. Bad press in the sense of not releasing a lot of information about certain games or sports, which is especially prominent in women's sports, has a negative effect. People who don't get as much information about sports tend to lose interest because it is too difficult to find what they want. Thus, less people follow those sports and fewer fans come to games, causing a decrease in revenue. Other types of bad press, such as Laura Ingraham's comments towards LeBron James and Kevin Durant, can have a positive effect on sports. In this case, many people became more interested in the issue and supported the NBA players after they were judged on their knowledge and grammar. Even if reporters like Laura Ingraham are embarrassing themselves, bad reports can bring more attention to issues and gain support for certain teams or players. After bad press releases, many people are also interested in watching follow ups to see the outcomes. This gets more people following issues and brings more attention to the subject and the people involved.

  13. Laura Ingraham should no longer be allowed on the air/ new, especially as a sports reporter being around athletes. The comments and insults that she made towards Lebron and the NBAP made her sound unintelligent and rude, although it brought her and the news channel lots of attention and publicity, it was definitely the wrong way to get attention. Fans and other people have spoken out and are very angry about how she publicly humiliated LeBron for unknown intentions other than to gain attention to her news company. I believe that this behavior should not be tolerated from reporters. It would be ok for her to disagree politely but she went about it the wrong way while on national TV. She went out of her way to defame and insult a public figure who was just speaking his opinion. If she had done it politely, it wouldn't have been such a big issue. Although bad reporting does happen, I don't think it is negatively affecting the sport. I think this because for the most part reporting on sports is just facts and stats and it's hard to hurt sports by stating player stats. The only way I could see it hurting it is if they keep saying how bad a team is, the ticket sales will go down because nobody wants to watch a bad team play.

  14. Laura Ingraham is a direct representation of what a unprofessional newscaster is. The platform she has the privilege to use from Fox News is one she does not appreciate nor take seriously, which is obvious from her lack of class when it comes down to the words she speaks with on live television. Not only did Ingarham get negative press for her insult against Kevin Durant and Lebron James, but she recently put down a Parkland survivor David Hogg. The question then arises, 'isn't all press good press?' From that it can divide into two separate arguments. If INgarham were to remain on the air, she would eventually create a bad image for fox news, similar to the one she has already cemented for herself. She may rake in the views, but it only sheds negative light on the franchise. Negativity when it comes to sports in the media is a subject worth the discussion. In some cases, negativity can be important to shed light on aspects of an athlete that may otherwise be looked over. For example,Ray Rice and all the negativity he was poured down with was necessary and gave from for understandable bias due to his illegal and immoral actions. However in Ingarahms place, her words were one hundred percent bias and opinionated, leaving her with a bad rep while simultaneously insulting some of the most hard working athletes of all time.

  15. While I do not agree with or support the aggressive statements made by Laura Ingram, I do not think that they are justification for her being "kicked off the air." It is important to recognize that just because many people do not agree with statements being made, everyone has their own right to speak their voice and say what they believe is right. Even though I do not think that she can or should be actually "kicked off" of television, I do not believe that the negative statements that she makes towards athletes belong in the media. The delivery of her opinions themselves completely ruin her ethos by making her seem unintelligent, rude, and disrespectful. Be belittling the intelligence of athletes like Lebron James, for no obvious reason, Ingram has tarnished her own reputation. I do not think that bad press negatively impacts the sports themselves, but I do think that infractions like these negatively impact the long-lasting relationships btwn individual athletes and news reporters nationwide. Because of Ingrams overwhelmingly rude statements towards not only James but athletes in general, professional athletes will now have much more reservation when it comes to speaking with reporters.
